Mazda Has Ties With Ford

Mazda Motors is a Japanese automaker with ties to the Ford Motor Company. Since 1971, the two automaker have collaborated on a number of products including each company supplying compact pickup trucks to the other at various times in their four decade relationship.

Ford and Mazda share the platform for the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute. The companies also share the same platform which underpins the Mazda6 and the Ford Fusion. Various Mercury models and one Lincoln model also share certain Mazda platforms and the Volvo S40 is derived from the same platform powering the Mazda3 and Ford Fiesta. In each case the respective automaker customizes their particularly model accordingly.

Mazda is not part of Japan's Big Three which includes Toyota, Honda and Nissan. However, the automaker has long held a special place in Japanese autodom, producing the first full production rotary engine as well as winning many styling, technology and engineering awards over the past several decades. One of the most notable cars built by Mazda is the Miata, a two seat roadster that has been a category leader since it went on sale in 1989.
