Making A Case For The Mazda Spiano
Although the Mazda Spiano has been available in Japan since 2002, the Japanese automaker has kept the car on its side of the Pacific Ocean since. Even with its strong relationship with the Ford Motor Company, Mazda seems hesitant to introduce the Spiano far beyond its home market.

This is disappointing news for Mazda fans as well as for fans of roomy, boxy entry level vehicles. There are no other cars that offer as much interior room as what some call a micro-mini and at a price that entry level buyers can afford. But, as the auto industry continues to shift, I predict that the Spiano will one day make it to our shores for the simple reason that its competitors offer similar types of vehicles here already.
As of Spring 2009, there were four similar vehicles being offered for sale in the states including the Honda Element, Scion xB, Kia Soul and Nissan Cube. Other automakers reportedly have similar vehicles in the works, suggesting that this segment of vehicles will soon begin to really heat up.
Besides a roomy interior and outrageously compelling styling, the price of vehicles like the Spiano gets plenty of attention. Both Kia and Nissan are offering their boxy delights for prices beginning at just under $14,000 with fully loaded models selling for under $20,000. Well equipped micro movers can be had for $17,000 well within the price range and budget of most new car buyers
Most appealing of all is that these vehicles can and will be customized ensuring that each owner has a unique ride. At the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, Kia Motors rolled out twelve different copies of the Soul, demonstrating just how customizable each model is. That same theory will likely be applied to the Spiano if and when it comes to America.
